entry 3 - computer mediated communication and ESL
This week
we learned about Computer Mediated Communication and ESL. CMC
is an umbrella term which refers to human communication via computers.
Temporally, a distinction can be made between synchronous CMC, where
interaction takes place in real time, and asynchronous CMC, where participants
are not necessarily online simultaneously.
There are also advantages to
communicating via computer equipment such as personal computers, handheld
devices, phones and web cams. Many people are shy in person, or they are
self-conscious about race, height, skin color or other personal
characteristics. When communicating through an electronic medium, the users are
less self-conscious about physical characteristics and less likely to
stereotype others. Therefore, CMC is very crucial in learning.
